FEI World Children’s Final at Spruce Meadows -
Local Riders Up Against the Best from Around the World

The premise behind the World Children’s Final, presided over by the international equestrian federation (FEI), is one of fun and good sportsmanship for the young athletes.  Host country Canada is represented by sixteen riders aged 10 – 14 and the other 16 qualified athletes are from Russia, Chile, Brazil, South Africa, UAE, Belgium, New Zealand, USA, Columbia, Australia and Germany.

Calgary and area is well represented with seven qualified from the region and the other Canadians qualified are from Ontario and B.C. The local kids will have fun showing their international visitors around, including a day trip to Banff and Boundary Ranch tomorrow, LaserQuest and shopping.

All the young athletes were matched up with their horses on Monday and have had a couple training opportunities to get used to their new mounts including a Warm-up Competition that took place yesterday afternoon.  The caliber of these young riders shone through as most of them navigated the course without any major difficulties.  Any problems that came up were attributed mostly to nerves and still getting used to a horse they just met the day before.

The Warm-up Competition Tuesday was won by German rider Rene Schencking on Hobson, a talented little paint horse.  Local Dewinton rider Jenna Pearson was second on Take Notice and fellow Canadian rider Rachel Schnurr from Waterloo, Ontario finished third.

The first qualifier will be held this afternoon at 3:15 pm in the Spruce Meadows Equi-Plex with the second qualifier to take place Friday at 4:45 pm.  These events will determine the top half that will move forward to the Voice Construction FEI Children’s Final on Saturday afternoon at 5:15pm.  A Farewell competition will be held for those that finish 17th through 32nd earlier Saturday afternoon.
